The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has said that the number of people said to have been killed during the recent clash between the Agatu people of Benue State and their Fulani counterparts was over exaggerated.
It was reported recently that over 300 people, including children and pregnant women were killed by the Fulani herdsmen and 7,000 others were said to have been displaced.
The Fulani herdsmen claimed the battle was said to have started after 10,000 heads of cattle belonging to the Fulanis were reportedly killed.
Addressing Stakeholders during a visit to Minna, the Niger state capital, the Mr. Arase said “I was around, I travelled to Makurdi, I did not see where 300 people were buried.”
“If you kill, you don’t just bury; you must take the corpse to the Police station before you bury, we don’t have that number of people”. He however did not give the official casualty figure.
Arase said the Police High command had completed arrangements to check the incidence of cattle rustling around the country, adding that the Police would next week start what he called
‘Metro patrol’ designed to arrest cattle rustlers.
David Mark, a four-term
senator, who just got victory at the re-run election, into the upper
legislative arm, may not celebrate his victory for long. This was
because, his convoy was attacked during his visit to Agatu local
government area of Benue state on Friday, March 11.

Senator David Mark, from Benue state
The Benue state born senator, who was on a fact finding mission to the
local government, in order to ascertain the wanton destruction caused by
Fulani herdsmen in Agatu, was welcomed with rains of bullets, which he
was fortunate did not hit him.

Senator Mark was not alone, as he had the likes of Comrade Abba Moro,
Nigeria’s former interior minister, Honourable Ezekiel Adaji, a member
of the House of Representatives, from Ohimini/Otukpo federal
constituency, security personnels, journalists, as well as faithful
party supporters in his entourage.
The attack which occurred at Akwu community of Agatu LGA, was swiftly
repelled by security agents there, as nobody sustained injury or died.
Subsequently, the Fulani cattle rearers were seen moving in another
direction, while the commotion lasted. The entourage also headed in
another direction when the dust was settled by the security outfits.
However, the former Senate president visited the communities totally
destroyed by the Fulani crisis like: Aila, Akwu, Okokolo, Adagbo, Akwu,
Ogboju and Odugbeho. Afterwards, Senator Mark gave words of assurance,
that normalcy will return to the communities.
One of the angry youths leaders, who was present during the senator’s
visit, urged the former Senate president to tell President Muhammadu
Buhari to remove the soldiers, as he said, “we are competent now to
defend ourselves.”
The youths further blamed the Benue state governor, Chief Samuel Ortom
and the Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase of not visiting the
destroyed communities.

mmadu Buhari may have
given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) the nod to
probe ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan.
According to The Punch, President Buhari’s special assistant on media
and publicity, Femi Adesina, in a chat on Friday, March 11, noted that
there was no secret agreement between the present and past presidents to
exempt Jonathan from the list of corrupt people to be probed by this
administration.
“The President does not teleguide the EFCC in any way,” Adesina said
while answering questions on whether the EFCC would seek the consent of
President Buhari before probing Jonathan.
Speaking in the same vein, Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to
the president on media and publicity, told The Punch that, “there is no
secret pact between President Buhari and any past President.
“If you know or understand him, President Buhari is not the kind of
person who will go into secret agreements. He is open about everything
he does.

“The war against corruption is open-ended. Nobody knows how it will
end.”
Shehu explained further that the war against corruption in the country
is not a witch hunt.
He said: “But the President is not on a witch hunt. If you remember his
acceptance speech after being announced as the winner of the 2015
general elections, he said without any equivocation that he would not
victimise or subject anyone to witch hunt.
“One thing very clear from the way he has carried on with the war
against corruption is that past officials of government have a window to
return looted funds to avoid investigation and trials which may be
drawn out and sometimes inimical to the exercise.
“People can help themselves and help the country without being noisy
about anything.
“The President is aware that he is under watch, locally and
internationally, in his handling of the war against corruption.
“Whatever international support he will get will depend on how open and
effective his government is in carrying out the anti-graft war.
“To that extent, the war against corruption knows neither friend nor
foe.”
The body language of the anti-graft agency had initially suggested that
they may be reluctant to bring in ex-president for questioning over
multi-billion dollar corruption allegations, especially the $2.1billion
arms deal.
This report also comes on the heel of Chief Olisa Metuh’s call for the
probe of erstwhile president, Jonathan, as he ordered most of the
payments being made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PDP spokesperson, who has been standing trials over his involvement
in the $2.1bn arms deal scam, was released on bail in January, 2016
after initially spending some nights at the Kuje prison.
